“Christmas Lights, Keep Shining On”

This blog post was published on December 23, 2013 and may contain outdated information.

In the 1800’s the closest thing people came to Christmas lights was putting candles on the tree…yikes. In 1880, Thomas Edison created the first electric Christmas light display by covering his Menlo Park laboratory compound with lights so that passing commuters and trains could see the dazzling show. Edward Johnson had the first electrically lit Christmas tree two years later at his house in Manhattan.

Today, Christmas lights glow around the world and houses are getting more elaborate each year. A house on YouTube features a Christmas light show timed to music; and most houses now have everything sparkling with lights from the house to all the surrounding trees and bushes, and then some added lawn ornaments for the final wow factor. Driving around to see all the beautiful Christmas lights is quickly becoming a holiday tradition, with many parks having drive through displays solely for that purpose.

The Dells is no exception! The area resorts, hotels, restaurants and stores are all aglow with Christmas lights and decorations welcoming visitors with holiday cheer. Lampposts down the main streets of Wisconsin Dells sport shining Christmas decorations that change from snowflakes, to reindeer, to Christmas trees to candles as you and your family make your way to various attractions and restaurants. Driving by the Original Wisconsin Ducks? Check out their clever Christmas light display, a holiday tradition and favorite around The Dells.

Christmas lights are one of our favorite things about the holidays! This Christmas vacation, be sure to take a drive around The Dells to enjoy all the stunning displays. One thing’s for sure, the future of Christmas lights is sure to be bright!
