Summer Sun Safety

The summer season in Wisconsin Dells has officially arrived! While vacations here are all about having fun and making memories, its important to stay safe from the intense sun and heat that summertime can bring. To make sure you and your family can make the most of their time outdoors here are some summer sun safety tips!

1. Sunscreen – Now this may seem like an obvious one but what SPF and how often to apply is not always clear.

  • – Use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher; if your family is filled with active bodies, be sure to purchase the sweat proof and waterproof kind.
  • – Apply every 2 hours or every time they get out of the water when swimming.
  • – Put sunscreen on 15-30 minutes before sun exposure.
  • – Kids 6 months or younger should not have sunscreen so it is necessary to keep them out of the sun completely.
  • – Be sure to apply generously and in places you wouldn’t think of: back of neck, ears, tops of feet, scalp, etc.
  • – Use a chapstick with an SPF as well as lips are another area common for sunburn.

2. Take Breaks – Keep in mind that taking breaks is healthy for everyone. It can be hard to pull yourself away from the summer fun, but try to enjoy lunch or snack breaks indoors where there’s air conditioning or in heavily shaded areas.

3. Hydrate – Staying hydrated is essential when spending time in the sun! People at most risk to dehydration are the elderly and the very young, but we all need fluids.

– It is recommended to drink a cup of water every 20 minutes when in extreme sun or heat.

4. Cover Up – Clothing coverage on top of sunscreen is even better! Most Wisconsin Dells resorts sell swimwear that provides extra UVA/UVB protection. Clothes that you can’t see your hand through tend to be the safest for protecting against the sun’s harmful rays.

  • – Hats are great for the outdoors! They protect your scalp from burning and help to shade the face, ears, and neck.
  • – Sunglasses are important because your eyes are just as sensitive to the sun as your skin. Make sure they offer UVA/UVB protection!

5. Double Check Medications – Some medications can increase your sensitivity to the sun. If you are taking any medications, double check the label and take extra precautions accordingly.

6. Heatstroke Signs It’s important to know the signs of a heat stroke. While rare, they can occur, especially in those who are extra sensitive to the sun. Signs include:

  • – Confusion
  • – Loss of consciousness
  • – Flushed face
  • – Hot and dry skin
  • – Lack of or ceased sweating

7. Sunburn Care – Even when taking precautions, sunburns can still occur. If your child does get a sunburn try the following:

  • – Take a cool (not cold) bath and apply a cool compress to their head.
  • – Place wet washcloths in the freezer and apply them to the heavily burned areas.
  • – Apply aloe-vera gel, which can be found at most resorts or nearby drug stores. This is even more beneficial after being cooled in the refrigerator.
  • – Anti–inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen can help reduce swelling and itching.
  • – Use plenty of moisturizer to help with the healing process, itching, and peeling.

Keep in mind that the sun is strongest from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and folks of all ages can be affected by its rays. These tips are extra important to keep in mind during the hot, summer months. It is always wise to consult your family doctor before a vacation for their recommendations.
