Dining

Smile and say CHEESE

Wisconsin produces about a quarter of America’s cheese and leads the nation in cheese production. Almost every restaurant in Wisconsin Dells proudly serves some variety of this nutritious treat. Here’s my “cheesy” list of where to get some great food with this dairy delicacy.

If you’ve never tried Mac N’ Cheese Tots, then plan to stop at the Dells Distillery on your next visit to the Dells. Crispy tots around macaroni and cheese balls and topped with monterey jack cheese sauce make for an ooey gooey explosion with each bite! I enjoy the Dells Distillery for a quick lunch break or when I want to bring my out of town friends to a unique dinner spot.

Wisconsin Brew Pub, located within the Kalahari Resort grounds, serves a taste of traditional Wisconsin Foods. A few menu items I would recommend would be their Westby cheese curds and creamy beer cheese soup made with Wisconsin Brewing Company’s Brown Porter. The Hot Crock Cheese Fondue appetizer is a must-try and big enough to share with a friend or two. This one of a kind treat is served with steamed vegetables and pretzel bread for your dipping pleasure in their hot cheese sauce.

Are you a big Macaroni & Cheese fan? I sure am, and that’s why I enjoy dining at MAC’S Macaroni & Cheese Shop. With over a dozen spins on the classic dish, try favorites such as the Chicken Bacon Ranch Mac, Buffalo Chicken Mac, and Loaded Baked Potato Mac! Other items at MAC’S include their four-cheese blend sandwich melts, wedge salads, and homemade desserts.

You know you’re in Wisconsin when you see cheese being served on a hot dog. Visit Hot Dog Avenue on your next trip to Wisconsin Dells because you’ve got to try their Green Bay Dog. This hot dog is topped with chili and melted cheddar cheese for an unbelievable hearty taste.

Try something new on your taste buds and grab a Black & Bleu Burger at Monk’s Bar & Grill or Monk’s at the Wilderness. The distinct taste of bleu cheese crumbles, crisp bacon, cajon seasoning and bleu cheese dressing drizzled atop a famous Monk’s Burger is enough to tickle my taste buds! Also at Monk’s, after you try their thin, flaky cheese curds dipped in ranch dressing, you’ll be craving them daily.

Known by locals as a fresh and creative restaurant serving modern American cuisine, High Rock Cafe serves up a mean mac & cheese. Using cavatappi noodles, American cheese, and cream, the Big Kid Mac & Cheese at High Rock makes me feel like a kid at heart. I particularly enjoy my Big Kid Mac with some Gilly Goat, an appetizer of goat cheese & peppers served with toasted sourdough bread.

Create your own grilled cheese sandwich, flat bread pizza, and more at The Cheesey Tomato. Dine with a breathtaking view of the upper Wisconsin Dells River and enjoy some cheesy comfort food. I challenge you to create your own grilled cheese sandwich loaded with cheddar, American, Swiss, provolone, and pepperjack cheeses! The mix and match options between cheese and meat are endless at Cheesey Tomato.

I occasionally want to pick up a fresh bag of cheese curds or grab a block of sharp cheddar to enjoy in a recipe of my own. When my cheese cravings hit, I like to stop by Carr Valley Cheese or Market Square Cheese. Carr Valley Cheese serves up over 200 varieties of cheeses and fresh cheese curds are delivered every day, except Sunday. Market Square Cheese offers over 150 different varieties of bulk cheeses as well as different flavors of cheese curds. Besides cheese, both of these stores offer gifts, chocolate, and other take home goodies as well!

With the above sample list of where to taste some seriously delicious Wisconsin cheese, I hope you’ll make it a plan to go out of your way on your next Wisconsin Dells visit and try a few of these delicious dishes.
