Our camping blog last Friday was a hit! We decided to expand on The Dells camping experience with a list of fun and easy campfire foods!
Breakfast Ideas
Pancakes/Flapjacks
Pancakes are an old-fashioned way to jazz up the morning hours. They are simple to make and filling for the whole family. Plain pancakes can be dressed up with syrup, fruits, whipped cream, or chocolate chips! Pancake mixes are easy to measure and bag at home. For an easy, classic recipe, try one that’s steadfast since the 1860’s. Pre-mix 3 large spoonfuls of flour and a pinch of salt! When you get to the breakfast hour, just add enough water to develop a creamy batter. Don’t forget to grease up the pan! Cook the bacon & sausage first, you’ll have the perfect pan for pancakes!
Breakfast Potatoes
Breakfast potatoes are another easy breakfast fix! You can either bring whole potatoes to the campsite or pre-cut and package your potatoes at home. Before sticking the potatoes on the campfire in a tinfoil package, add your favorite spices (try rosemary, yum)!
Blueberry/Orange Muffins
For a unique twist to the campfire breakfast, try blueberry/orange muffins! All you need is oranges, blueberry muffin mix, water, and tin foil! Halve an orange, fill one half with blueberry muffin mix, place the top of the orange back on, and wrap in three layers of tin foil!
Eggs
Eggs seem like a tricky feat for the campfire, but there are several easy ways to create the perfect breakfast eggs! One idea is to pre-make personalized omelets in bags at home, this way you can customize your omelet with your favorite additions. Try putting eggs, ham, cheese, onion, green pepper, tomato and salsa in a freezer bag. Toss your omelet bags into a cooler when you head to the campsite, then all you need to finish your omelets is a campfire and a pot of boiling water! Another great egg option is to pour the eggs into the cups on a muffin pan. Be sure to grease the pan first. Quick (<5 minutes), easy, and little cleanup, perfect for campers on the go!
Lunch & Dinner Ideas
Hot Dogs
Most families reach for the classic hot dog lunch while camping. It’s inexpensive and easy for a family! Hot dogs require minimal refrigeration leading up to the meal and can be customized with condiments of your choice! Try pairing your hot dogs with baked beans and chips.
Macaroni and Cheese
Mac and cheese may not be the first meal that comes to mind when you think of camping, but this warm comfort food is super simple at the campfire. We recommend boiling and packaging your noodles at home. This makes it easy to add butter, milk, and your choices of shredded cheese over the campfire!
Nachos
Nachos are great for the picky eaters in the family. They can be as simple as chips, meat and cheese, or as complex as you’d like! We recommend corn chips, refried beans, black olives, cheese, tomatoes, onion, salsa, corn, and slices jalapeños! Dig in!
Chili
Warm up your nights with a campfire chili. Like nachos, chili can be customized to your liking. We’d recommend browning the meat at home and adding tomatoes, beans, onions, corn and jalapeños in a large pot at the campfire!
Dessert Ideas
Ice Cream Cone S’mores
Everyone knows about the traditional campfire s’mores, but have you ever heard of ice cream cone s’mores? This dessert twist offers a cleaner take on the ooey-gooey treat! Fill an ice cream cone with alternating chocolate chips and mini marshmallows then wrap the cone tightly in tin foil and toss it on the campfire grate! If chocolate chips aren’t enough, think about adding a peanut butter cup.
There are oodles of other campfire food ideas out there, but these are some of our favorites. Cost effective, easy for a large family, fast, and delicious! For more ideas on easy campfire foods and access to several local campgrounds, visit our camping Pinterest board.
