With the snow falling and the temperatures on the chilly side, the First Annual Parks & Rec Winter Festival was a success! Families gathered on Saturday, January 18th from 1-5pm to enjoy some fun and interesting winter activities such as: snowshoeing, sledding, ice sculpturing, Gingerbread House making, experiencing Jack Wax, enjoying s’mores and delicious concessions provided by High Rock.
We got to talk to Amy Workman, the Program Director from Upham Woods, an organization that helped make this event possible. Upham Woods is an Outdoor Learning Center that provides educational opportunities to youth, youth leaders, and adults through programs focused on environmental and leadership education.
Amy was running the snowshoeing station which was a big hit! She explained to us why she loves snowshoeing. “Snowshoeing is a lifelong sport. Anyone at any age can do it and it’s a great workout!” She also gave us three tips how to prepare yourself for the extreme cold temperatures: “eat, use the restroom, and stay moving.”
After talking with Amy, we got to experience Jack Wax! Jack Wax is pure maple syrup that’s boiled down and then caramelizes when poured over snow and becomes a tasty taffy treat. The steps to making Jack Wax are as follows (see pictures below):
1. Melt PURE maple syrup for about 10 minutes or until it’s thickened. Don’t boil for too long or it will turn into sugar!
2. Keep stirring to avoid burning.
3. Pour on top of snow. Let it settle for a couple of minutes to allow it to caramelize.
4. EAT UP!
